Dog Training - How and Why You Should do it

By: Matthew Hick

Dog training is one of the most important things you can do for your dog. A well-trained dog is a happy dog and is a pleasure to have as a pet. They can coexist peacefully with society. A dog that has not been given dog training is an unhappy dog and creates frustration and chaos for the owner. In addition, he or she can become a menace to society.

Dog training actually fulfills a very important need. It establishes a good relationship between you and your pet. You can now communicate with your dog. Dog training will enable you to respect and understand each other. Your dog will know that you are in charge, and will recognize your voice command. This allows you to have instantaneous control over your dog’s behavior, preventing hazardous situations.

Dogs don’t know how to act. They must be taught. As the owner of the dog, you teach them through dog training. It is important to start this dog training a few days after you bring your dog home. Dogs can learn as early as seven weeks of age. At this stage, dog training should be motivational and fun. Rewarding the dog with food, toys, or praise will reinforce good behavior. It is important not to use physical punishment during dog training. You don’t want to destroy your dog’s trust.

Routine is vital to productive dog training. Everyone in the house should agree on the routine. Responsibilities should be assigned and rules followed. These must be adhered to at all times. Dogs enjoy dog training, but have short attention spans. Patience is an attribute needed during the dog training phases. But, the time and patience you use during dog training will create a bond between you and your dog that will last a long time.

You have two options regarding dog training. You can either do it alone at home or hire a professional trainer. Sometimes the cost of maintaining a dog is too high. This can cause many people to opt not to expend any more money by hiring someone to help with the dog training. Sometimes, the socialization the dog receives in professional training is worth the added cost.

There are several types of dog training. There is behavior dog training, which teaches leash manners, house training, and good actions. Another type is obedience dog training. This is often considered more of a showmanship type of training. The owner makes the dog perform tricks, such as sitting, standing, rolling over, and fetching. The last type of dog training is activity training, which teaches hunting, herding, and sports.

As a dog’s caretaker, you have been given the responsibility of taking care of him or her. By utilizing dog training, you can help your pet’s relationship with you and with society. It will relieve tensions that exist with dogs exhibiting poor behavior, and at the same time, prevent tragedies. Each year dogs are put down due to behavioral problems. Many of these problems could have been prevented if the owner had taken the time and effort to use dog training. Do your dog and yourself a favor and make dog training a part of your nurturing efforts.
